Lake Powell

Our next stop on our journey north and west – Lake Powell, an enormous reservoir filling Glen Canyon behind the Glen Canyon Dam. It’s the centerpiece, although certainly not the only feature, of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. We camped at Antelope Point RV Park for a planned two days.

Antelope Point RV Park – neat, clean and full of big rigs
My nominee for the cutest rig in the park.

Down the hill from the RV park is a marina where houseboats used on the Lake are docked. Des and I visited Lake Powell 25 or so years ago. We were not prepared for the boats we found tied up at the marina!

No, this is not an office building, it’s a five-deck houseboat!
More modest, but still capacious, houseboats drydocked near the RV park

As we learned a bit later, the water levels in Lake Powell vary quite a bit due to the flow of the Colorado River and the increasing demand of the expanding population. While we were there, the water level was very low. This photo shows just how low:

This ramp down to the water is designed to float with the water level. During our visit it was 50 feet above the surface. The marina shuttled visitors down the slope in golf carts.

The marina includes a sizable restaurant and gift shop, all floating on the surface of the lake. There are also boat tours of Antelope Creek and other locations leaving frequently. We took a tour of Antelope Creek, and the nice ladies running the tour allowed Gracie to join us. She was in her element!

Approaching the mouth of the canyon
Our boat was expertly maneuvered into the narrow canyon. The view was ever-changing and always gorgeous.

At the end of our tour, the guides enjoyed getting to know Gracie. Even though she left footprints on the seat (!) they said they were happy to have her on board.

I mentioned at the beginning of this post that we had planned to stay at Antelope Point for 2 days. Our departure date was to be May 6. However, while we were there, an intense storm was brewing across much of the country. While we were not in the area where the worst weather was predicted, the wind at the RV park was intense. The forecast called for high winds for the next 2 days. We elected not to travel until the winds had died down enough to make it safe on the road. (We later learned that the storm spawned an EF4 tornado that struck Barnsdall and Bartlesville, Oklahoma, where we had visited three weeks earlier. We were relieved to learn that Woolaroc’s buildings and livestock were not harmed, although some tree damage did occur. The towns of Barnsdall and Bartlesville were damaged, and one person was killed in Barnsdall.).

The rainbow and sunset on the evening of May 5 was beautiful at Lake Powell, but indicated trouble was brewing elsewhere.

The extra time at Antelope Point gave us an opportunity to see a little more of the area. We decided to take a tour of Upper Antelope Canyon, the start of the slot canyon that eventually becomes Antelope Creek. This turned out to be a great experience!

Our tour guide, Lester, demonstrating how slot canyons are formed, using a pile of clay and a bottle of water.
Petroglyphs on the walls of the canyon. When Des and I visited Lake Powell years ago, we were allowed to hike the canyon on our own. Since then, increased traffic and vandalism to petroglyphs and the canyon walls has eliminated unguided entry to the canyon.
Fellow tour members proceeding through the canyon.
There is a belief that if you walk through an opening like this one, you leave your soul behind. It’s recommended that you walk back through it to rejoin with your soul before proceeding.
Ladders have been strategically placed along the route to help with navigating climbs
There were some tight squeezes
Potential spot for a break, but not for long!
What you use if you don’t have a ladder.
The last ladder?
OK, the last ladder! What a beautiful room!
Back on the surface, the prickly pear cactus was in bloom.
If you’re in the area, I can recommend this Antelope Canyon tour.

After a lovely stay at Lake Powell, we set out for Utah. We had a great time and visited some beautiful places during our stay in Arizona. Hope to be back soon!
