Slept late this morning – actually SLEPT until 6! And Des until after 7!! We were pretty tired last night, and then the wine tasting on top of the tiredness really knocked us for a loop. So we got a later-than-planned start on today’s travels. But no problem, we’re on vacation, so no deadlines to meet.

The Jeep was very thirsty this morning; she is drinking much more than usual while towing Wanda2. So we had to fuel up before we hit the highway. That was a small adventure in itself, beginning with a failed visit to a REAL truck stop (not the ones shared with cars that you usually see). Jeep finally bellied up to the bar next door and drank her fill, and we hit the NYS Thruway.

Many RVing bloggers recommend traveling with a full tank of water if you are towing, to help control the weight distribution between the tow vehicle and the trailer. In our case, this adds ean extra 400 pounds right over the hitch. We had filled up with water at Hummingbird Hills, so we were in a good position to test this theory. And it worked! The Jeep rolled down the interstate at or even slightly above the speed limit. Not a twitch from the trailer. And even with all that additional weight she got better mileage today than yesterday. I guess there is something to this myth!

OK, enough RV wonkiness …

Today’s route took us past Syracuse, an area I frequently traveled while attending Syracuse University many moons ago. Memories of snow-filled excursions down the thruway came flooding back. This is one challenging place to be in the winter! Fortunately it’s still balmy summertime here.

We are camping tonight at Cayuga Lake State Park, on the northern shore of Cayuga Lake. I unwittingly chose the least trailer-friendly site in the place, not a level piece of ground on it. We trooped back to the park office and the nice lady at the desk gave us a list of sites still available on this busy weekend. We were able to find one that is nice and flat, easy to get in and out of. Thank goodness!

This park is quite big and we had a nice wander through the whole thing with Gracie in tow. Most of it is closed off now that summer is over. It must really jump here during the high season! Lots of large, pretty sites tucked among stately old trees. Lovely spot! The locals, and a few “from away”, like us, have almost filled the open sections. Many parties going on! Gracie has tried to crash all of them during our walks this evening.

And now we are all fed and ready for snoozing. The parties are quietly going on, very nice background!
